Tips for installing waste pipe

For installing waste pipe you'll need.

1. Hack saw.

2. Level (optional depending on how long the waste pipe is.)

3. Metal cutting snips

4. Metal or plastic strapping

5. Small nails

6. Pipe cleaner and Solvent (glue)

7. Insulation tape.

With the incredible price increase of copper, I'll be focussed on PVC (plastic) waste pipes for this section.

Running the waste pipe

On the bottom of your sink, tub, bath, vanity or shower, you will need to attach a plug and waste.

Squirt silicone round the rim of the waste hole.

Take off backnut and poly washer.

Insert plug and waste into hole.

Push on poly washer up to the underside of sink and tighten back nut.

Tighten till firm.

Wipe of excess silicone with toilet paper. (Do this straight away and keep wiping till all the silicone is removed.)

The alternative to this, is spray the excess silicone with soapy water.

Then simply wipe off excess with iceblock stick.

Attach trap to plug and waste (This is the S or P shaped fitting.)This stops sewer gases from entering your building.

At this point it is important to note:If your waste pipe is too long and gurgling is heard when you pull the plug you may need to install a vented trap. Right, time for installing waste pipe.

The waste pipe connects directly to the trap.

You need to slide the traps, bottom nut over the end of the waste pipe.

Look for a tapered rubber ring at bottom of trap.

Stretch the rubber ring over the waste pipe and slide up pipe about an inch/25mm.

Push pipe up trap and tighten nut.

Take waste pipe out through floor or wall. (you'll need to drill out hole in joinery.)

Before we continue learn how to make a waste pipe joint then when your done click on your back button.

Back again, (great) lets keep going.

You need to put a bend on the pipe where it comes out under the floor and angle towards a gully (photo below) or main drain or waste pipe.

If you are going into gully you will have to break the concrete out of the back to allow for new waste pipe.

To stop pieces of concrete falling into drain while tapping out concrete, put a wad of newspaper into drain and remove when finished.

Re mortar back of gully when finished.

When installing waste pipe, make sure the pipe slopes downward on an even gradient. (use a level to check, if slope is gradual)

Hang in there, we're nearly home.

You need to support the waste pipe with channel and strapping. (Nail strapping to timber bearers.)

Use the insulation tape to hold pipe secure ever 2-3 ft/1m
