Stanley flush valve

Welcome to stanley flush valve repair page.

This old beauty has been around since Noah was a boy, so expect your materials to be pretty tired. (you'll need to handle parts with care)

The symptoms of this faulty flush valve, is water running into your toilet pan. (the noise, slowly driving you insane)

The fix can be quite easy as long as the valve seat is not damaged.

You will simply replace the flush washer and clean the valve seat to put an end to your toilet Naiagra Falls.

The Solution

Turn the water off at cistern tap.

Flush the toilet.

Take the lid off your cistern/water tank and look at the base of stanley flush valve.

There will be a small stainless screw at the bottom of the flush assembly.

This screw, holds the stanley flush assembly in place.

Undo the screw(anti clockwise) just enough so that the assembly is free to turn.Give a quarter turn and the assembly will lift up.

As you lift, gently direct the flush wire out of the tripper arm.Do not try to straighten wire to get it out of arm, as this will more than likely break.

Remove flush assembly.

Turn over and check flush washer condition. If it looks slightly perished, it will need replacement. (I cover this soon, but just to cover all the options, carry on reading)

If the washer looks in good condition.

1. Look into cistern where assembly sits. (This is the flush valve seat)

2. Check valve seat is smooth and has nothing caught on its rim.(run your finger around to check for rough spots)If you feel rough spots you can try to clean up with a nylon scouring pad or steel wool.

If this all looks good try this.

Blow down air tube while covering the other end with your finger. This will show up any leaks in tube.

If this is broken you may have to go to a recycler as parts to this, are no longer made.

Time to change your flush washer

You'll need a cresent/adjustable wrench and poly/multigrips.

1. Hold the washer nut with cresent.

2. Hold flush assembly stem on washer cup side.

3. Turn nut anticlockwise.

4. Once the nut is free, peel off washer.

5. Clean up washer discs with nylon scouring pad or steel wool.

6. Install new washer and do up retaining nut.

7. Place flush assembly back onto seat (ensure stem is centred into centre guiding hole.

8. Turn until lugs on side of plastic cup slot into holding clips.

9. Do up stainless retaining screw firmly. (Not too hard, remember this toilet is probably as old as your grandmother.

10. Turn cistern tap back on and test.

Congratulations on repairing your stanley flush valve.

Finally you'll be able to sleep without the water torture.
