How to make a threaded joint

The threaded joint is one of the strongest and most dependable of all the jointing systems.

Done properly and you can feel safe with this type of joint in your walls, ceiling and under floors.

Today I,m going to share some tips that will show you how to make this bullet proof joint.

Before I begin, I need to extend your vocabulary by 2 words.

Understanding these 2 words will make everything clear and help your follow the steps outlined.

Above, is what plumbers refer to as a nipple or threaded brass.

You can get it precut to different lengths and comes in parallel thread (the thread depth is evenly cut) or tapered thread (The thread depth starts of deep and gets less as the thread moves in.)

I like working with tapered threads as the joint becomes tighter as the thread moves into the socket.

The socket (above) recieves the nipple and the spaces between the threads are filled with hemp or thread tape. (Jointing material)NB Hemp is a natural plant fibre and far superior to thread tape.

OK, back to school.

Now please remember the terms I am about to mention. You will find them throughout the site in many different plumbing applications.

The nipple is refered to as male.

The socket is refered to a female.

To rememeber this (and I'm not trying to be rude, it just a great way of remembering)

Think of the human sexual parts (blush) and how the male enters the female.

This is the same with plumbing threaded joint.

The male (nipple) is screwed into the female (socket.)

So if you hear the term female adapter, you know we are talking about the socket part of the joint.

Male adapter and yesss, your onto it (the nipple or threaded part of the joint)

Hope this hasn't offended anyone.

OK lets make this threaded joint

Step 1. Feather out some hemp. About 6-8 inches or 150-170mm. (For 1/2" to 3/4" nipple)

Step 2. Scratch male thread with hacksaw blade. (This roughens up thread and stops hemp or thread tape slipping off.)

Step 3. Hold nipple in left hand and roll hemp or thread tape around the male nipple. (roll over the top of nipple) this again stops hemp/thread tape from peeling out of joint when connection is made.

Thread tape joint.

Step 4. For hemp joint smear with graphite. (lubricant) vital for great joint.

Step 5. Place male nipple squarely against socket.

Step 6. Turn clockwise by hand until joint starts to tighten.

step 7. Hold nipple and socket with multi/poly grips and tighten untill the nipple has entered the socket 3/8" or 10mm.

Step 8. Sit down and pour yourself a cool berverage.

Congratulations, joint completed.
