The water hammer arrester solution
The water hammer arrester has its place in plumbing but with a few simple changes, the need is very rare.
Answer the following questions to find out the best solution to your particular water hammer problem.
Does your water hammer happen when only one particular tap is turned on?
Does your water hammer begin after you have run a hot tap and your roof tank/ header tank is filling. Does the water hammer begin as your toilet cistern fills? If the answer is yes to either of the last 2 questions, you're on the right track. The solution is one of the two following options. The ball cock that fills your roof tank or cistern can have a faulty diaphram or jumper that holds the washer. This sets up vibrations in your pipes that will wake the dead. In both instances you should replace the ballcock/float valve with new. Replace and test.
The solution for poor plumbing
This problem is caused by the shape of your plumbing leading to your header tank.Normally your pipes run along your ceiling beams then come up to your ballcock/Float valve just before your tank. If the pipe comes up on its vertical rise greater than 2ft/700mm away from the edge of the tank you may experience water hammer.
Note in the photo above how the pipe running vertical is close to the tank. Also note the blue line heading away from tank. If your pipe takes this route away from tank it is probable that this is the cause of your problem. To rectify you need to change the pattern of pipe to what is showing in photo. You will need to off set your pipe down onto your ceiling beams and clip firmly. For more info on pipe working go

The other alternative is to cut in a water hammer arrester close to the tank. Although this method may work, it does not get to the root of the problem. You will need to cut in a threaded tee piece and screw the arrester onto it. For more info on how the water hammer arrester works go to
