and then show you some simple repairs. Photos included.
Of all the silent water problems, I've found this to be the most sneaky.
It's usually a job that you intend get round to at some stage but never seem to get to. (It doesn't seem to cause damage and the water hardly seems to trickle much at all)
A leaking toilet has the potential to cost you a fortune in water rates, so come on and let find out ( why is my toilet leaking.)
1. Flush washer worn.
This quiet water waster is real easy to determine.Go to your toilet cistern and turn off the water running to your cistern/water tank. Your shutoff valve usually comes out from wall to the side of, or beneath your cistern/water tank. Occassionally it will be inside the tank itself.
Leave off for 15 minutes. Now take the lid off cistern/water tank and put 10 drops of food colouring. Leave again for 15 minutes. Check toilet bowl for colouring. If the bowl is still clear after 15 minutes, your flush washer is fine. If the water is coloured you will need to change flush washer.
Change your flush washer
Faulty ballcock or float valve.
Your ballcock or float valve may also be the culpret as to ( why is my toilet leaking )This is the valve that automatically fills and shuts off the water every time you flush. To test for this, rule out flush washer first (see above.) If flushwasher is fine, turn water back on to cistern and wait 15 minutes. If the colored water is now running into bowl you know your ballcock or float valve needs maintenance. NB Some cisterns/water tanks, over flow outside via an overflow pipe. Generally this is on the outside wall of the toilet. You will notice it dripping or even running if the valve has really let go. These are the two reason as to ( why is my toilet leaking.)
